Back to the Mainland

We woke up and walked around the boardwalk one last time. We saw the long-tailed macaques conducting their morning ritual and tried to snap a photo of a pygmy squirrel.

Bill tried to pick up our laundry and pay our tab, but the credit card machine was down, so he was not able to. We would have to wait until we arrived back in Sandakan to settle up.

We had our first hot breakfast at the lodge, which was quite good, then boarded the boat back to the city.

We made one stop along the way to check out a large crocodile sunning himself. It was a beautiful day and seems like there are less logs in the water today.

Yunus greeted us and drove us to the Sandakan Hotel for lunch. The meal was good, but poorly executed. They had a “make your own” bar which allowed you to choose your meat, vegetables, noodles and spice. It took way to long to execute though.

We took a short tour of the city after lunch, but it did not have a lot to offer. We were lucky enough to get the connector we need for connecting to earphones to the iPad to watch TV and movies together on the plane.

After lunch we headed to the Rainforest Discovery Centre. We walked around with Nexter looking for birds, but it is not a great time of day to do that. Nonetheless, we did see a few:

  • Brown-Throated Sunbird

  • Diard Trogon

  • Crimson Sunbird

  • Hairy-backed Bulbul

  • Black-crowned Pitta

  • Plain Sunbird

After the centre we were dropped at the airport. We had a bite to eat at the restaurant, boarded the flight back to KL and arrived without incident.

Our driver met us and we landed back at Trader’s Hotel without any incident, then headed to bed.
