Amazing Sabah

We had a great morning. We did not get a wake up call, but I woke up at 5:40, which gave us just enough time to get ready and be at the dock for our 6amcruise.

Nester and our captain, Ramsah, were ready to go in one of the fibreglass boats that have both a gas and electric motor, which was perfect when we were cruising along a small section of the river and spotting lots of birds and wildlife.

Here is what we spotted this morning:

  • Monitor lizard

  • *Stork-billed kingfisher

  • *Black and red broadbill

  • Handkerchief butterfly

  • Long-tailed macaque

  • Proboscis monkey

  • *Plain Pygmy squirrel (only the size of the entire length of your thumb for his body and tail)

  • White-bellied barbet

  • Delania (yellow) flower - the petals are edible

  • *White crowned hornbill

  • Plantain squirrel

  • Black-naped monarch (bird, not a butterfly)

  • *Oriental dwarf kingfisher

  • Lesser green leafbird

  • Long-tailed parakeet

  • Brown barbet - endemic to Borneo

  • Greater racket-tailed drongo

  • Blue angel moth - daytime dwellers

  • Green Imperial pigeon

  • Dollarbird

  • *Rhinoceros hornbill

  • Brahminy kite

  • Anhinga or Oriental Darter

  • Wrinkled hornbill

  • *Storm’s stork - most endangered stork (we saw this when we were anchored for breakfast)

  • Yellow rumped flowerpecker

  • Aligator

  • Serpent eagle

  • Crested goshawk

When we arrived back at the lodge, we had a short break, then did a tour on the boardwalk with Nexter and saw:

  • Dusky broadbill nest

  • Purple-naped spiderhunter

  • Borneo skink - endemic

  • Red-eyed bulbul

  • Yellow rumped flowerpecker

  • Ashy tailorbird

We had a short rest, enjoyed some time by and in the pool, and then headed to the restaurant for lunch. The chicken curry and pumpkin with coconut sauce was really good.

After lunch we did some work on the blog in the Gomantong Hall area. I was hoping to get a good internet connection so I could update my eBird app for Oct Bird Day, but it says the internet connection is not good enough. That was a shame!

Bill was making edits to the photos and thankfully has corrected the issues that I had caused last night by adjusting some of the settings. We now have the ISO set correctly, at 1600.

New and/or impressive airings tonight:

  • White-bellied sea eagle

  • Oriental pied-billed hornbills

  • Javan mynas flying by

  • Pig-tailed macaque

  • Lesser fish eagle

  • *White-crowned hornbill

  • Slender-billed crow

  • Green pigeon

  • *Crested serpent eagle

  • Bat hawk

  • Silver leaf monkey babies are orange

  • Blue-eared kingfisher

  • Common kingfisher - migratory

We had a nice meal this evening and have been moved all the way up to be seated by the bar. A lot of new guests arrived today, so we are taking up most of the restaurant area now, not just the lower part.

Between a few Zzzs I was able to see a few new animals and birds on our night cruise:

  • Common palm Civet

  • Buffy fish owl

  • Small-toed civet

Tonight I was able to correct some of the exposure issues by moving the AV to the positive numbers when it is darker.

Bill stayed up to get some work done on our photos, I decided to get a full night of sleep instead.
