Under Water Safari
Nairobi, Kenya
January 07, 2016
It was another early morning for us. We had to be up to pack everythiing up. have breakfast, move our luggage to Karen's room and be in the lobby by 8:30.
Karen and I took some precautionary Gravol and I think we ended up needing it for the ride to the boat boarding as much as anything else! We left the main road and took a dirt road that they were preaparing for construction and then a winding dirt pathway through trees and bushes to the waterfront. It was remarked by Bill and Karen that the last stretch was a good spot to dump a body...
Our guide, March, had outfitted us with flippers and masks, so we carried them to our vessel and he brought a cooler of fruit, water and juice for us. Our captain navigated us to the dive site
Story!
.
We put our flippers hopped in the water. It was a shallow area and I was able to touch bottom while donned our masks, then off we went! We were surrounded by lots of other boats, snorkelers and some scuba divers. It was not long before we started seeing lots of colourful fish!
It took me a while to adjust and get my mask clear, but once I had the hang of it, it was awesome! Most of the time we stayed close to our guide and each other and managed to avoid other groups. Karen expertly managed the Go Pro and fed some of the fish.
It was just like being in a massive acquarium. We saw lots of different and beautiful fish and coral. Thankfully we did not see anything menacing, so I did not freak out and swallow a buch of ocean water. After an hour of so, I started to have enough of the mouthpiece and gagged a bit, otherwise it was a very amazing experience and I would love to do it again!
We managed to dodge people and boats and then hopped back in our boat
Story!
. We enjoyed some juice, water and fresh fruit before heading back to shore.
The pick up point was closer to our hotel, but the captain had to navigate in the shallow waters near shore due to rocks and low tide. It was really slow going for a while and Karen and I were getting sleepy.
The drive back to the resort was pretty short. We had some lunch, relaxed a bit and showered. I also did a bit of shopping and caught a few more rays before heading back to subzero temperature back home. Motto picked us up at 4:00 and we were at the airport and checked in 2 hours before our flight.
We snacked on some pretty good samosas and a chicken pie before boarding. We had been playing a guessing game since breakfast. Karen and I were trying to guess the name of the first song he downloaded. We asked him a lot of "yes" or "no" questions and we finally caved while boarding at the airport in Zanzibar
Story!
. Even after he told us that the band was The Motels, we still did not know the name of the song. Maybe it means something to you, but it meant nothing to us.
On the flight I finished The Martian (the Book), which I really enjoyed, We landed in Nairobi on time and then boarded our next flight to Heathrow a couple of hours later.
We landed at Heathrow around 6:00 and had plenty of time to have a delicious eggs benedict at London's Pride, do some shopping and moisturized sampling at Duty Free and grab a cup of tea latte at Cafe Nero's.
Bill and I decided to watch The Martian (the Movie), since I finished reading it yesterday. I dozed off for a bit until they served breakfast, then stayed awake for the rest. I thought the film was good, but felt that reading the book made it a lot easier to follow the plot as the film seemed to jump around a lot.
Karen was being a good corporate citizen and worked on her presentation for Vegas. She is flying back to Chicago this afternoon and then leaves for Vegas tomorrow and will be there for 6 days. Must be nice to be young and have that kind of energy!
