Finally Home
Flag of a Toronto, Ontario, Canada January 08, 2016 We landed at Heathrow around 6:00 and had plenty of time to have a delicious eggs benedict at London's Pride, do some shopping and moisturized sampling at Duty Free and grab a cup of tea latte at Cafe Nero's. On the last flight, Bill and I decided to watch The Martian, since I finished reading it yesterday. I dozed off for a bit until they served breakfast, then stayed awake for the rest. I thought the film was good, but felt that reading the book made it a lot easier to follow the plot as the film seemed to jump around a lot. Karen was being a good corporate citizen and worked on her presentation for Vegas. She is flying back to Chicago this afternoon and then leaves for Vegas tomorrow and will be there for 6 days. Must be nice to be young and have that kind of energy! I started reading Still Alice and was really enjoying it. Karen and I also watched Cast No Shadow. It is a Canadian film that was shot in NLFD - it is a really beautifully shot, a great story and really well acted. Check it out! Bill watched The Man From U.N.C.L.E. and thought it was great. After landing in Toronto, we went through Customs quickly and did not wait long for our bags. We were sad to see Karen go her separate way. We had a fabulous time with her and were so glad that she suggested this adventure that we probably would not have taken! We took the TTC home and I read more of Still Alice. I did not realize that it was a "crying" book, but I was definitely crying while reading it on the subway! Back at home the girls were very happy to see us. It felt good to be back! We were looking forward to recovering for a couple of days before going back to work on Monday.
Top Experiences:
Summitting
Experiencing the different scenery and vegetation on Mt Kili
Ngorogoro Crater, especially the first view of it
Lessons Learned:
Bring plastic bags for Mt Kili, even if your bag is supposed to be water proof
Hand and foot warmers are worth every ounce of weight and every penny
Easy to carry and high caloric snacks for yourself and your guides (energy/protein bars, GU, and small packages of chocolate and salty snacks worked well)
Poles were a huge help, especially climbing down
Gators work well for keeping rocks and dirt out of your boots (I did not like my pair because they had elastic around the ankle)
Two pairs of thin gloves or one pair of thin waterproof gloves; it gets really chilly when it is raining and you need to have your hands out of your pockets for balance
